Top 10 Must-See Anime Series: #8 – Golden Boy

If you don’t know me very well then you might be surprised to learn that I’m an avid anime buff.  And with anime gaining popularity in the U.S. (with people who wouldn’t normally watch it) I’ve compiled a list of the Top 10 Must-See Anime Series for those of you looking to pop your anime cherry.  Now while there are alot more (and better) ones out there, I decided to stick with the more popular and completed ones that you can actually buy in this country without having to look that hard.

8.  Golden Boy

What Wikipedia Says:

Kintaro, despite having met the requirements for a degree, left Tokyo University without graduating. Golden Boy depicts his living the life of a free spirit, roaming Japan from town to town, job to job. During his travels, Kintaro meets several women whose lives he dramatically changes, despite poor first impressions. He constantly observes and studies the people and events around him, recording his findings in a notebook he carries on his belt.

Why it made the list:

Golden Boy is an all around funny series for no other reason than the main character.  Kintaro is a freeter, a person who specializes in doing only temporary jobs.  So in this series what you get is:  6 episodes, 6 different jobs, 6 different women, and 6 different reasons why you will fall in love with Kintaro.  Watching him reminds you of some hornball guy you knew in high school.  I’m not gonna spoil it for you but the situations he finds himself in and the women he runs into are just hilarious!  Also, this is one of the rare series where the english voice performances are almost better than the original Japanese.  There were so many little things in this series that made it memorable and great like the toliets and his drawings in his notebook.  It was so memorable that if you yelled the phrase, “this is so educational!” I few people will laugh and instantly know that your a fan of Golden Boy.

OCBENJI One Line Review:

“Have you ever had a horny friend who constantly chased women?  Well slap some ink on him, make him a computer programmer, a noodle maker, a tutor, an errand boy, a servant for the rich, and a swim instructor for a week each with a habit for hugging toliets and you will have Golden Boy.”
