There and Back Again

There and Back Again

As I struggle to look up that staircase too many times traveled
Twisted knots of memories become tangled and unraveled
Flashes of good times and bad,
Some funny some sad
Some happy some mad
Another feeling just added, and I smile just glad
They say you can never go home, I guess living is believing
And this makes the second home I’d be leaving
I shake my head and scramble the picture again
I pick an image out the stack and try to understand
What went wrong? I pick another, what went right?
Then I start to put it together and readjust my sight
I want the root of the problem, but I keep getting the leaves
I need to get to the heart of the matter not just button the sleeves
My foot got a little too heavy, I went too fast
I lost control, bounced, skidded, and crashed
