His life undergoes a drastic change when he discovers a mysterious notebook, known as the &#8220;Death Note&#8221;, lying on the ground. The Death Note&#8217;s instructions claim that if a human&#8217;s name is written within it, that person shall die. Light is initially skeptical of the notebook&#8217;s authenticity, but after experimenting with it, Light realizes that the Death Note is real. After meeting with the previous owner of the Death Note, a <em><a title=\"Shinigami (Death Note)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shinigami_%28Death_Note%29\">shinigami<\/a><\/em> named <a title=\"Shinigami (Death Note)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shinigami_%28Death_Note%29#Ryuk\">Ryuk<\/a>, Light seeks to become &#8220;the God of the New World&#8221; by passing his judgment on those he deems to be evil or who get in his way.<\/p>\n<p>Soon, the number of inexplicable deaths of reported criminals catches the attention of the <a title=\"Interpol\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interpol\">International Police Organization<\/a> and a mysterious detective known only as &#8220;<em><a title=\"L (Death Note)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/L_%28Death_Note%29\">L<\/a><\/em>&#8220;. L quickly learns that the serial killer, dubbed by the public as &#8220;Kira&#8221; <span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">(<span class=\"t_nihongo_kanji\" lang=\"ja\" xml:lang=\"ja\">??<\/span><span class=\"t_nihongo_norom\" style=\"display: none;\"><span class=\"t_nihongo_comma\" style=\"display: none;\">,<\/span> <em><span class=\"t_nihongo_romaji\">&#8220;Kira&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/span><span class=\"t_nihongo_help\"><sup><a title=\"Help:Japanese\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Help:Japanese\"><span class=\"t_nihongo_icon\" style=\"padding: 0pt 0.1em; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: bold; font-size: 80%; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; text-decoration: none; font-family: sans-serif; color: #0000ee;\">?<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/span> derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the word &#8220;<em>killer<\/em>&#8220;)<\/span>, is located in Japan. L also concludes that Kira can kill people without laying a finger on them.
