Aspiring to Be the ONE: Acer Aspire One Review

The New Acer Aspire One is a netbook. Its basically a smaller, portable, and cheaper laptop optimized for doing internet stuff.  I bought one about a month ago to test it out.  And for the record, this is the future.  Here’s what I found….

First Impressions:

This thing is tiny!  I have big hands and this thing feels like a small book I had in the 5th grade.  I can palm this thing with ease and if I wore a bigger pant-size I could almost fit it in my back pocket.  I think I got DVD cases bigger that it.

Its really light.  Aden can scoop it up and go running with it without breaking stride.  And my almost 1 year old nephew has no trouble flipping it over.

The screen is super clear!  For a screen so small (8.9-inches) it does a really nice job of shrinking a screen full of information into its mini-version.  The screen is also very bright, it can light up my whole room at night almost as much as my 46-inch tv.

Its fast!  Intel really did good job on the Atom processor which powers the One.  They got the name down perfectly!  Its small and powerful. It can handle most stuff as fast or faster than my desktop.

Its asthetic. (see pretty as a girl) I saw the blue one in circuit city before buying the pearl white one for myself and I must say that both look like apple could have created them.

Its packed full of stuff.  In its small little case, its got a decent specs (which I’ll get to later), a built-in webcam, two SD card readers, almost full-sized keyboard, mini-trackpad, and wifi.

The Good:

Intel really knocked one out of the park with the their Atom processor.  Its really fast for the price and fits right in with the rest of this netbook.  Tech-wise it gets the job done even with the absence of a CD/DVD drive and after using it for a few weeks you wonder if you ever needed one in the first place.  You won’t be using the built-in webcam to hold any global net-conferences but it gets the job done.  Its as pretty as anything Apple’s come up with and if you slapped the Apple logo on it, you wouldn’t know the difference until you booted it up.

The Bad:

Not much to say here except unless you absoultely need a  CD/DVD drive.  And I guess you could bitch about the quality of the webcam but that would be nitpicking.

Conclusion:

Go get one!  As of this writing, they at only $349 at BestBuy.  However I recommend that you pop over to Amazon to get one because they probably have more.  Either way, go get it now and thank me later.  Here is what Acer says about the specs if your into that kinda thing:
